Hi –
When I decided to abandon take-out food for home cooking, I discovered that the highest quality, freshest, most soul satisfying ingredients came not from large grocery stores, but from small, local businesses scattered throughout the five boroughs. I was gleeful when my search turned up an exquisite loaf of seven-grain bread in a warehouse in Queens and a farmer with incredibly tender hydroponic bok choy.
At dinner parties, I converted friends to the joy of cooking and eating real food, but when I’d tell a story about a typical shopping expedition that took two trains, a ferry and a bus, their faces would fall. The simple life seemed unreasonably complicated.
I founded Sweet Roots NYC to curate and deliver the best ingredients for urbanites like my friends who have similar aspirations about eating well, but want home cooking to be less epic journey and more nourishing way of life. The Sweet Roots NYC blog is an extension of that. It is about the extraordinary world of food makers, thinkers, vendors, writers, and eaters.
I tell their stories from the only perspective I know — that of a busy, but endlessly curious, city-dwelling home cook — and I do it because discovering the work they do has brought me peace of mind and the idea of sharing it brings me tremendous joy.
May your journey to home cooking be short and your experience of it be sweet.
